I only have comments For #1 since I am familiar with this area:
a. Current available media center solution is only in Windows platform.
b. Toshiba has a Media center laptop. Of course price tag is high.
c. Asus has a computer called digimatrix that has VCR and DVD form factor. Appearance looks neat. It was released this September.
d. There are also small form factor (SPP) computers (most famous is Shuttle's XPC). Some of them even support playing music, DVD without boot to OS.
You can make it by yourself now. I have been use a computer with Win98 as home entertainment center for a while (Connected to my living room TV). I used a NVIDIA Personal cinema video card (has functionality such as TV tuner, MPEG1,2 recording, DVD, VCD, MP3 playback, remote control). I use this computer for playing DVD, VCD, and downloaded DIVX, RM files, playing music, and playing game. The only thing is it is in a regular ATX case instead of a nice DVD player look form factor. There is no place to get a DVD player size case. But you can buy a cheap DVD player and put a computer in. I am sure you can find a lot of factories to make this kind of case for home entertainment center.
In conclusion, it is feasible but competition is high.
