I disagree with the top gun at MS China.
1. The difference between company management in the west and China is not as he described. Great leaders in the west are those who can inspire people's hearts and minds and unify people for the same goal. They probably don't ask you what you ate for dinner last night but they know the "hot" buttons and sweet spots of people around them. In psychology, there are different levels of human needs - from basid biological needs, being part of a social group, to self fulfillment (the highest level).
2. Mooncake in China becomes a turkey in the U.S. Many companies in the United States still have the custom of giving a turkey (or a turkey gift certificate at a grocery store) to all employees for the Thanksgiving.
3. I doubt if the top gun's time is wisely spent by interviewing every single new hire. This is even more of a problem seeing the posted messages from XDJM here. It is the hiring manager who should have ultimate say in the decision process. The big goss could well be interfering the process since subordinates tend to guess/follow boss' preference, not the best choice for the position or the company.
4. There are other ways to show appreciation of your employee from the top GUN other than interviewing. In fact, the interviewing may be a lousy move. I worked at a financial services company, where the CEO will host a breakfast with employees every month (for people starting at the headquarter office). Every one got to introduce himself/herself, of course including the CEO. He would share his personal likes, etc. When he learned about my background in China, he asked briefly about the banks there. He gave people a heart-warming welcome and pointed out the potentials and opportunities for everyone.
