It's been nine years since Cui Jian's last concert in SF
in Aug 95. The difference is obvious. Last time it was
in the afternoon, right next to the bay, with well over
5000 people in a large auditorium. This time the venue
is 50% smaller, with maybe 1500 ~ 1200 people. The parking
is more difficult too, the nearby parking garage is full,
I have to drive 5 minutes north along Fillmore to find a
parking space on the street.

The concert started at around 8:26 pm exact, that was 26
minutes later than scheduled. I am surprised to see a large
percentage of audience under 25, who have not even reached
puberty when Cui Jian was still hot. You can tell how much
the audience likes the song by counting how many are singing
along with him. Fans are cool to his new songs and keep chanting
"lao3 ge1, lao3 ge1". I hate those new songs, which are neither
artistic, nor interesting.

The top five, by my counting are "Nursery Chick", "Nothing to my name", "False Travelling Monk",
"Let me have some wild fun in the snow" and "A piece of red clothes".

At one point he got a few fans on stage and a few girls starts
to kiss his face, and that is the climax of the concert.

Cui Jian has NOT produced a single, real hit after his 1991
"Solution". All the new songs sucks. He has meandered away from
the mainstream mindset and produced filler materials that
nobody likes, maybe not even himself. If his success can be
attributed to the confidence and strength that's accociated
with the tweenage spirit, he has lost that in all his post-30-year-old
songs.
